Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bristol reciprocating compressor a direct replacement for Copeland or Tecumseh?
Yes, There may be some tubing changes or modifications required. Of course the run capacitor and starting components should be changed in this type of replacement.
When replacing a failed compressor, how much difference in BTU's can you get by with (plus or minus)?
If you stay within +/- 5% in capacity (Btu/hr) you should not see a difference in the system performance. However, you should always contact the equipment manufacturer when considering this type of change.
If you can't find a direct replacement, should you use a smaller BTU or larger BTU compressor?
Like in Question #3 try to stay within +/- 5%. If it is impossible to stay in that range then going for a smaller Btu/hr rating would be best.
Is the Bristol feet configuration the same as Tecumseh or Copeland uses?
In most cases the mounting foot configuration is the same. Typically, the standard is 7.5" x 7.5", others include 8" x 4" and then there are at least two Tri Mounting foot configurations used in the compressor business
Can you use a Bristol reciprocating in place of a Copeland Scroll?
Yes, There will be some tubing changes or modifications required. The mounting foot configuration will be different. Of course the run capacitor and starting components should be changed in this type of replacement.
Is it ok to use universal start assist devices (i.e. Supco) on Bristol compressors?
The only Start Assist Devices approved by Bristol Compressors is the type manufactured by Kickstart OEM Products.

What is Bristol's position on alternate refrigerants?
We are developing and testing compressors for application to R407c and R410a refrigerant systems. The models that we develop are determined by the requirements of our customers. As other refrigerants are developed then we will develop compressors for use on those refrigerants.
Is Bristol Compressors' changing their name to "Benchmark"?
No, Benchmark is a new evolutionary compression technology that is part of Bristol Compressors' product family.
Does Bristol Compressors' sell product outside the United States?
Yes, approximately 40% of Bristol Compressors' sales are sold to customers outside of North America.
Does Bristol Compressor have a refrigeration product offering?
Yes, Bristol has a brand new line of R404A compressors for low and medium temperature commercial application (*63* series).
Are scroll compressors more efficient than recips?
No, recips and scrolls have similar performance output, depending on the capacity, refrigerant, and application.  In smaller displacement models (1.5-3.0 ton), recips typically have a performance edge.
